AARON

“You think you’re ready?”

“Ready?” Avery frowned at me as we tossed a ball around in the pool.

“Yeah, man. To tie the knot.”

“I’ve been ready since the day I put a ring on her finger.”

“Don’t give him any ideas,” Ezra smirked, and I flipped him off.

“Like you aren’t planning on putting a ring on Leigh Leigh’s finger.”

“Nah, there’s no rush,” he said. But I saw the glint of want in his eyes. The yearning.

Of course, he planned on putting a ring on it. He was as all-in as the rest of us.

“What’s stopping you?” Avery arched his brow, flicking his eyes over to where Jase and my dad were shooting the shit. His lips curved with amusement, and I rolled my eyes.

“I am not scared of Jason.”

“Keep telling yourself that, brother.” Laughter rumbled in Ezra’s chest.

“Fuck you, man. Fuck. You. I’ll pop the question when I’m good and ready.”

“I always thought Kaiden would be the first one to do it,” Avery said.

“Yeah. Feels weird as shit he’s not here,” Gav added. “But you’d know all about that, Chase.”

“It’ll calm down. Rookie camp is no joke.”

“Yeah, from what Poppy said, he’s hardly been in touch with Lily.”

“It’s intense. The coaches want you focused on nothing but the team. But he’ll come out the other side.”

“Wearing a Wild jersey,” Bryan grinned.

“If anyone can earn his spot, it’s Kaiden.”

“Burgers are ready,” Dad called, and we all piled out of the pool, grabbing our towels.

“This was a good call,” Jase said as we joined them over at the table.

“Barbecue, beer, and the sunshine, what more could a guy want?” Cameron added. “Just don’t get sunburnt, Son. You don’t want to ruin your wedding photos with a shiny face.”

“Relax, Dad, I applied lotion.” Avery shook his head.

“Okay, dig in.” Dad slid a plate of patties onto the table. “Just don’t tell your mom there wasn’t any healthy options in sight.”

“Mya got you on a diet again, Mr. B?” Avery asked.

“Something like that. I love that woman beyond words, but she drives me crazy. If it’s not a diet, it’s a new supplement or exercise.”

“She has a point, Ash. You have gained a little weight.” Jase said, barely containing his laughter.

“I’m barely five pounds heavier than I was five years ago.”

“He’s just messing with you, old man,” I said.

“Old man, huh? You want to put that to the test, Son?”

“Let’s eat,” Cam intervened, knowing that the two of us could be as competitive as hell once we got going.

I loved my dad, loved him something fierce. But we didn’t always see eye to eye.

He wanted me to have a better plan for after college. I wanted to enjoy my last year before I had to go out into the real world. Thankfully, Poppy was all too happy to roll with the punches and see where things took us.

Despite a successful three years with the Rams, football wasn’t in my future. Just as gymnastics wasn’t in Poppy’s.

But we would both have our degrees and the fortunate positions to come home to Rixon and figure out the next chapter of our lives.
